Sweep Panorama mode is one interesting feature of Sony NEX-5 where you can take a series of shots which can be automatically stitched to create one panoramic image. This is taken using the ‘Normal’/’Left’ direction at 1/160 sec. with 18-55mm E-mount lens

The first time you get hold of the new Sony a NEX-5, you may probably classify it as more of a mid-size digital camera rather than a regular digital single-lens reflex (DSLR). This is actually Sony’s innovative development in response to the growing category of mirrorless interchangeable lens camera where Panasonic, Olympus, and Samsung have manufactured earlier. Although it carries the brand name Sony Alpha, NEX-5 has its own lens mount called E-mount with two available kit lenses: 18-55mmf/3.5-6.3 with Optical SteadyShot and 16mm f/2.8 pancake. To make use of the Alpha and Minolta SLR lenses, an adapter is made available. If you’re using a point-and-shoot camera for quite a time now, trying out NEX-5 is just handy and convenient to operate – primarily designed not to intimidate those not-so-techie shooters. This is also one good option to consider if you want to upgrade and push your shooting activity to the next level where you can enjoy the best of both worlds – being compact and offering a bevy of DSLR features. Its stylish design, weighing around 229g and measuring 10.8mm x 58.8mm x 38.2mm (W x H x D), coupled with its unconventional interface and a few buttons are features commonly found in most compact cameras. However, the simplified control layout provides ease of use for beginners or those who are not yet accustomed to extensive manual controls found in DSLRs. With its three-inch live view LCD monitor (which can be tilted 80° up and 45° down) and ultra-compact body (made of magnesium alloy), NEX-5 it is an advantage to use particularly in some areas where shooting is restricted using those eye-grabbing, bulky DSLR cameras. Since it has a lighter and smaller camera body which can be put inside your pocket, shooting comes naturally because of its comfortable grip. When the iAuto (Intelligent Auto) mode is activated, you can point the camera at your desired subject and shoot. You need not worry whether you have the correct exposure values or not because the scene recognition function analyzes automatically whatever shooting situations you are in. The idea here is actually similar with that of the point-and-shoot where everything is automatic but it has limited options. If you want to highlight your subject by blurring the background or taking control of the depth-of-field which can be done only using your DSLR, you can instantly achieve such by pressing the “Bkground Defocus” under the iAuto mode. It allows you to rotate the control wheel to your preferred setting. This is appropriate for portraiture where you can enhance or highlight your subject and throwing other elements out of focus. Even if you are new to photography, you can right away learn some of the basic techniques and important pointers through the camera’s built-in shooting tips. From the fundamental guidelines on how to properly hold the camera to shooting in low-light condition, taking good photos is now handy (no matter what the situation is) since you can easily explore some of the instructions as your guide. All these quick tips, however, will only lead you how to make use of the iAuto mode. On top of standard scene selection that lets you fix on a particular shooting category (Portrait, Landscape, Night, among others), one interesting feature is the Sweep Panorama mode. Series of shots is automatically stitched to create large panoramic photograph, either in horizontal or vertical direction. It actually works better in stationary scenes like landscape or nature and not in situations where there are moving subjects such as cars. Taking control of your shots is possible similar to that of any DSLRs. Through the Shoot Mode menu, you are provided with the standard user-controlled options including Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual (PASM). The ISO, White Balance, Metering, and other settings can also be found under the Brightness/Color category. One problem here is that, there is no direct access in all these settings just like the regular DSLR where you can directly change from one setting to another as you shoot. Because of its large sensor, 14.2-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS, NEX-5 produces high quality images as well as video output (Full HD 1080i in AVCHD or MP4 format). Other salient features include Speed Priority Continuous mode (shooting at up to 7 fps.), Handheld Twilight mode (providing high resolution image in low-light conditions), the soon-to-be-available 3D Sweep Panorama mode, among others. Since it is equipped with a range of DSLR features and functions – complemented with a sturdy, compact body, Sony NEX-5 may serve as a backup camera even for experienced photographers. But this is one good camera for those who simply want a light and easy shooting, with quality output comes in handy.

Paris: How to visit the Louvre How do you see the Mona Lisa without the crowds? We begin our series on the greatest museums with how to make the most of France's national gallery. By Nick Trend
So you've jostled for a view of the enigmatic smile. You've probably stood reverently in front of the Venus de Milo, hunted out Michelangelo's slaves and toured the Egyptian Rooms. But have you seen the treasures from Mesopotamia (all the more important now, given the damage and looting in Baghdad), where the galleries are often almost free of visitors? The exquisite paintings by Watteau and Vermeer, high up on the quieter reaches of the top floor? The extraordinary extravagance of the apartments used by Napoleon III? Perhaps not - but then, how do you visit a museum with three million works of art, 6,000 paintings and several miles of corridors and galleries? There are some astonishingly beautiful things to see, but unless you know the shortcuts, you can queue for an hour before you get through the door.
A New-Style Museum Visit—in 3D A new multimedia feature on Louvre.fr presents artworks in an imagined or reconstructed 3D space. Visit these virtual "galleries" for a whole new look at works of art. The Ambassadors' Staircase A sumptuous staircase at the Palace of Versailles: via Charles Le Brun's preliminary drawings and cartoons this 3D recreation gives you access to the decor he designed and realized over ten years as a tribute to the reign of Louis XIV. The staircase was demolished seventy-two years later on the orders of Louis XV, to make way for new rooms. The south church at Bawit in 3D This virtual visit to the Bawit monastery takes us back in time to ancient Coptic Egypt in the first millennium of the Christian era. This imaginary exhibition presents the elements that were found during the site excavations and features a reconstruction of the church as archaeologists imagine it was in the 7th century AD. Louis Lacaze: Reconstruction of the room dedicated to his collection Discover a 3D modelization of the La Caze room – now the Bronzes room, Sully wing, first floor, room 32 – as it was in 1913, when it housed 177 paintings by masters such as Rembrandt, Chardin or Watteau, from the prestigious collection bequeathed by La Caze to the Louvre. 3D imaginary exhibition: Jean-Honoré Fragonard This imaginary exhibition is a tribute to Fragonard, one of the greatest French painters of the 18th century, and also one of the first curators of the Musée du Louvre.
